I finally joined social media for real
So, I have finally taken the plunge and joined Instagram. I resisted this decision for many years because I just feel like the whole enterprise is manipulative and dangerous and I hate being a product. I also despise Meta as a company. Many moons ago I once had a Tumblr account, but I completely deleted it at some point and lost all of my followers. I have a TikTok account started for me by a former student, but I have no idea how to use that platform.
An editor once said to me that if I wanted to reach young people with my writing, I had to meet them where they are, which is on social media. My daughter is on Instagram and so are many of my students, so I am trying to figure out how to use this whole platform. If you are so inclined, please follow me at @kristenghodsee. You can watch me flail.

2023 Reading Challenge: The Great Transition by Nick Fuller Googins
I got a preprint of this wonderful novel from the author, and I finally got around to reading it. I enjoyed the book immensely: it is hopeful and imaginative and will appeal to anyone interested in alternative visions of our climate crisis future. I was especially a fan of the co-housing developments that appear throughout.

Photos from the Half King Reading Series at the Salmagundi Club in New York
On Tuesday night, I had a wonderful time with Glenn Raucher and the Half King Reading Series. I did this event at the old Half King back in November 2018, and according to Glenn, I am the first author to have done this event in both places. We had a great crowd that asked fantastic questions. Thanks to Shannon Hennessey for organizing it all!
Summer Reading: Either/Or
I like The Idiot much better, but this book was still insightful and funny.

Summer Reading: Life is Short
I had high hopes for this one, but found it pretty jargon-filled and inaccessible. Thankfully, it was actually quite short.
Summer reading: The Idiot
My daughter has been pestering me to read this for months and I finally got around to it. It took a while for me to warm up to it, but in the end I fell in love with the narrative. And now I must start the sequel…

Photos from Freiburg and Waldkirch, Germany
I have lived in this part of Germany for roughly sixteen months over the last 8 years, and the natural beauty of the place still astonishes me. I went to the Münsterplatz Market on Saturday and enjoyed a lovely evening in the Black Forest Town of Waldkirch that evening. Yesterday, I went to the Freiburg Schlossberg Festival and caught a great snap of the sunset.
