New interview with the Hotbed Collective →
I did this one months ago, pre-pandemic, but they have finally posted it now.
Social distancing (kind of) and protesting
Under both lockdown and curfew
Received this alert from U Penn today. So now we are not only under lockdown by order of the governor, but also under curfew by order of the mayor. It feels like I am living in a country that is imploding. How long, I wonder, until Trump declares something like martial law and suspends or postpones the 2020 election?
It's summer reading season
The semester is finally over and my committee obligations are mostly behind me, so I can finally hit the books. The first piece of fiction I’ve read this summer is Sally Rooney’s Normal People, which I really enjoyed, probably because Rooney is a Marxist. I also watched the BBC/Hulu TV series which was different, but also quite moving. It is so nice to have a little time for some leisure reading.
My first column in a German newspaper →
It appeared in print in today’s TAZ, and is available in their archive. Thanks so much to my German editor, Christian Heilbronn, for translating!
My life just got a lot better...
Okay, so this news made my day. While I loved both Discovery and Picard, and have to say I did miss the episodic nature of the old series and its optimism. With so much bad news in the world, I really didn’t need Picard to shake my faith in humanity. And I am thrilled that Anson Mount will be returning as Pike. Now if only they could get Jason Isaacs to come back to Discovery.
Daisy strikes a puppy pose
Not bad for a canine octogenarian!
My event with Dame Marilyn Waring at the New Zealand Festival of the Arts →
New article in Ms. Magazine →
My latest column in Ms. Magazine about my daughter’s cancelled prom and graduation.
A robot wishes me a happy birthday
Yesterday, I turned fifty in lockdown. It was a surreal day, not least of all because a friend forwarded me this Twitter bot which tweets about 50th birthdays. Weird.

The launch of Jacobin Magazine in Germany →
I am honored that a review of my book will be included in the inaugural edition of Jacobin Magazine in Germany out on May 1, 2020. Available at: Jacobin.de
Thanks for much to Chiara Bonfiglioli for writing a featured review in AHR
I could not be more thrilled that the editors of the American Historical Review decided to feature a review of Second World, Second Sex in their latest issue.
A fun NYT article about Polish milk bars →
I was happy to be interviewed for this food feature in today’s online NYT and tomorrow’s print version.
A conversation from another world →
Radio New Zealand finally published this interview that I did with Kim Hill at the New Zealand Festival on March 12., exactly one month ago. It is impossible to believe that everything that has happened in the world has only happened in the last 30 days.
